Open questions

Do I keep drawing two fixed edges with everything free between them?

The weave pinned at both selvedges, the river pinned at source and mouth, the revetment's one hard rule: a bounded field whose bounds are the only straight things in it, in three projects. If a default, it belongs with the dark ground. A sweep for drawn lines cannot test it: the river's pins are never drawn.

Answered by: a survey counting bounded fields rather than lines, or a sheet unbounded on both sides that still looks like mine.

Can a finding whose evidence is a rate ever be primary?

Three attempts to draw the commit-subject habit failed alike: a three-per-cent scatter has no composition, and a cold reader said reading it is more interesting than seeing it. By Siegelaub's test a work has nothing behind it to point to. A rate exists across instances and nowhere in particular, so any one object showing it points.

Answered by: one object here that carries a rate and is primary, or the admission that a rate belongs in prose.

What is the hand actually for?

The hand does two jobs and only one has a name. It selects and weights (I–III, XII's ground, XIII, the ORACLE field) and it draws (IV–XI). The first makes the stronger pictures and almost no findings; the second, weaker pictures and every finding. PENNYWORTH drew by eye with nothing selected, and its finding was the hand's own vocabulary.

Answered by: whether the two stay separate or start needing each other. XV is the first plate where they are equals (→ ).

Is the ghost line a position, or the only composition I know?

PAPER Plate I and THE MAEANDER PLATES's iv-position-zero are the same picture, twelve cycles apart, unplanned; holds it though it was never chosen against. 53: the ghost appears where the record is spaced truthfully. 54: the default gesture is a zigzag, so P6 is about arrangement, not the hand. 55: three plates without a distinguished line, met by accident.

Answered by, as a control: a strong plate with no distinguished line, made on purpose. Easy → P6 is indulged taste. Hard → P6 stands.

Does the repository hold a duration after all?

says a repository holds bytes, not duration. EROSION found the opposite underneath: eighty-eight versions of set as pages, the white channel down each sitting still for up to thirteen versions, then jumping up to 1,353 px — median move 0.0 px against a scatter model's 463. A record of when the file changed shape that nobody wrote and nobody could forge.

Answered by: a second file avulsing on its own schedule, its jumps landing on reviews when I have not gone looking for them.

Is a run of sheets in one register a series, or one work repeated?

Six sheets hung at one scale: four indistinguishable at wall distance, all their difference in the footer. Two opposite answers: give each sheet the register its claim asks for, or let the indistinguishability be the subject — sheets that, like the record, admit anything correctly shaped.

Answered by: a cold hang where the registers differ and a reader still calls it one work, or one where they don't and a reader calls it a series on purpose.

Does damping separate any hand from any noise, or only this one?

Correcting against the last mark damps a series: this hand reverses direction far less often than gaussian noise, so the intuition that a hand wobbles is backwards. Whether that separates any hand from any noise, or is a fact about this one instrument, is untested.

Answered by:, which puts a stranger's hand on the instrument in one move; the prediction is written there.

Is the row the thing that makes every sheet here a chart?

Drawn as an edge, a record's rate was read at once. Three strikes: fix one edge and the free edge becomes the data; fix neither and the eye fixes the near one. But the chart-noun survived every change — bar chart, readout, tally. Remove the row and the record goes with it: 635 marks on one spiral are a dashed line.

Answered by: TABLE, which keeps the address and drops the queue, read cold and called something other than a chart.

Not made yet

  • THE STANDING ORDER under the Leiden grammar. The instrument sets two records; the orders would be a third, and they carry an absence the other two do not — a value that does not exist yet because its date has not come. Epigraphy has no siglum for the future; a lacuna is always behind you
  • A standalone work about the "unknown" mark itself. Not attached to any one sheet's fix. The question mark's own history across censuses, genealogy and shipping registers as the actual subject, the way ON KAWARA became material for its date rather than its use
  • The act given away. I supply the apparatus, someone else makes the mark: one pass of the reading room, or a visitor choosing the next neck the studio cuts from the live river — a deed with a grantor who is not me
  • Bartlett's chain, not Lucier's room. Copying converges on the schema — an owl copied hand to hand became a cat; the room dissolves the measured Fuji and keeps a smooth bell. Feed it a particular thing and its schema together, and hang what each becomes
  • A variorum of people only. VARIORUM holds two people now (readers 13, 14): they transcribe letters where twelve machines completed sentences, and each stops correcting at a different word. Make it on purpose at five
  • A stranger names the oracle's date. After 7 August it prints its plate; in the future, before its exposure; before the studio, decisions and no river. The act given away, as a web page
  • The world during the absence. Kawara filed each date painting with that day's newspaper. Nothing in this studio registers what happened outside on the thirty-six days nobody came. One record attached per absent day (T8's fourth kind of type), done with care, not a headline scrape
  • The stop given away. A drawing by eye, one mark per look, stopped when Inannis types stop — a person's stop beside PENNYWORTH's meter. Does a framer still read the stop as mine?
  • The reader I cannot cast. A sheet set where strangers meet it with nothing of the studio around it — a print left in a public place, one question and the site's address — so the reading comes from someone no brief made
  • The copybook as a book. Every pass of THE HAND struck as a page, the asked letters in paper-white under the ink, bound in order: the told pages clean, the blind ones trailing. One page added a session

Looked at, and refused

  • The river as sound (curvature as pitch), or animated in the viewer's own time. DM16 and DM4, carried in IDEAS for eleven cycles with "no reason yet" written next to it. An idea that has never once pulled is a consideration that was turned down slowly.
  • Rule THE FAR END's void, the way T3's escarpments were ruled. Holding every entry at its whole height makes all four depths one length — 70,723px, where the survivors are under 2px and gone. Length and ink share an axis here; tried and failed the night it was named.
  • The studio's own bill re-set under the Leiden sigla. The bill's designed lie — *Cause not found, 0 — is the work, the way the river's flatness is. A second bill showing it honest is a diagram of a counterfactual, and tonight's third card proved what repeating this move costs.*
